Spanner Re² GmbH has been involved in reforestation projects since 2008, including the Rwenzori area in West Uganda.

Within the initiative LifeCO2, founded by Spanner GmbH together with Rwenzori e.V., over 50 hectares of forest have been reforested. Now, another 14,000 trees have been added.

Here you can see further pictures of the reforestation process.

Our involvement in the Rwenzori area has a sad history. During the rule of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, illegal logging took place, and mountain forests were destroyed en masse. The consequences were erosion, drought and harvest failures. The population began to emigrate.

Now, six years after the beginning of reforestation, the situation in Rwenzori is improving sustainably. The ground water levels have stabilised, and even previously dry wells have started to produce water again.
Now, rainfall does not wash valuable soil away; instead, people can plant fruit for two harvest seasons.
The emigration process has been stopped and people are even returning home.

The additional 14,000 trees will contribute to further improving life quality in West Uganda.

Agriculture and forestry complement one another there. This is also known as agroforestry.

Thanks to support from Rwenzori e.V., the Kasese diocese, which is in the Rwenzori area, schools, accommodation and recreation grounds are being built for children.

By the way: In order to live CO2-neutral in Germany, each inhabitant requires around one hectare of forest. In Uganda, half a hectare is sufficient. And: Young forest binds around ten tonnes of CO2 per hectare, year on year.
